Bathroom Renovation: Complete Tools & Materials List

Every tool and material you need for a DIY bathroom renovation. From demolition to finishing touches — with difficulty ratings and pro-hire recommendations.

A bathroom renovation is one of the most rewarding DIY projects — and one of the most tool-intensive. This guide covers every tool and material you'll need, organized by project phase. Know what to DIY and when to call a pro.

Hire a Pro For

Plumbing re-routing, electrical rewiring, and structural changes require licensed professionals and permits. DIY the cosmetic work; hire out the infrastructure.

Phase 1: Demolition

Tools Needed

Pry bar, hammer, utility knife, reciprocating saw (for stubborn fixtures), safety glasses, N95 mask, work gloves, heavy-duty trash bags

Difficulty: Easy

Demolition is satisfying and hard to mess up. Protect fixtures you're keeping with drop cloths. Turn off water first.

Phase 2: Subfloor & Waterproofing

Materials

Cement board (Hardiebacker), waterproof membrane (RedGard or Kerdi), cement board screws, mesh tape, thin-set mortar

Difficulty: Medium

This is the most critical DIY phase. Bad waterproofing = mold and rot. Watch 2-3 YouTube tutorials before starting. Apply membrane generously — corners and seams get double coats.

Phase 3: Tiling

Tools & Materials

Tile (+ 15% extra for cuts/mistakes), thin-set mortar, notched trowel, tile spacers, tile cutter or wet saw rental, grout, grout float, sponge, level, chalk line

Difficulty: Medium-Hard

Subway tile is most forgiving for beginners. Start from the center, work outward. Use a laser level for your first row — everything else follows it.

Phase 4: Fixtures & Finishing

Materials

Vanity + faucet, toilet, mirror, light fixture, towel bars/hooks, caulk (silicone for wet areas, latex for trim), paint + primer, exhaust fan

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

Most fixtures are bolt-on. Vanity installation is straightforward if plumbing locations haven't changed. Use 100% silicone caulk around the tub — latex caulk grows mold.

Budget Ranges

Cosmetic refresh (paint, fixtures, accessories)$300-600
Full DIY renovation (tile, vanity, toilet, fixtures)$1,500-3,000
Pro + DIY hybrid (you tile, pro does plumbing)$3,000-6,000
